A program update from PS 191

"Our program is unique and one of a kind. Make sure you stop by with an open mind!", Roger Redhead, Site Director for the Oasis/Kids Creative after school partnership at PS 191.

Here's what Roger has to say about the year so far:
We kicked off the first year of the PS 191 Oasis/Kids Creative After School Program with a Boom! Boom-Chica-Boom that is.......
The program is composed of 10 Group Leaders, 9 Instructors and 100 of the most energetic, open-minded, and creative participants in the city.
We had our first but definitely not our last Community Service Project in the fall. "The Yes We Canned Food Drive" gave our participants the ownership of collecting food for our less fortunate and donating it to the nearby shelter. The second drive, which involves the entire school, is on its way to being an even greater success.
The participants have taken trips to Fordham University for a look at art work from around the world through the Others Are Us art exhibit. We also participated in theatrical workshops at the neighborhood Barnes and Noble.
Our Middle School students started their first semester of "Youth Internship". They are placed in the younger programs' groups and provide assistance to the Instructors and Group Leaders as well as provide homework assistance to their fellow participants. The second semester will include the implementation of workshops and projects that will better ready them for the working world.
On Fridays, we are engaged in friendly competition and games in the auditorium that promote independence, positivity, and fun.
Finally, we are finishing up our first semester of classes with performances from the Kids Creative classes that will showcase the participants' hard work.

Here are two of the shows you will see:
"The Super Hero Ninjas and the Rock Stars"
The superhero ninjas are rocking out to the rockstars, however, the dragons are trying to play planet tag and are distracted by the music so they crash the party and try to eat everybody! The superhero ninjas teleport to sushi planet and trick the dragon into eating sushi that turns them good so they can all enjoy the rockstars' music!

"The Search for the Super Saving Ingredients"
Once upon a time there was a farm, on the farm there was a sick cow. The superheros made her sick with the fumes from their super speed flying so they decide to help her by making their magic soup. They need to go to Rainbow planet, Vegetable Planet and Mars to find all the ingredients!

The closing of the National Center for Schools and Communities at Fordham University

Since 2005, Kids Creative has built a partnership with the National Center for Schools and Communities (NCSC) at Fordham University. They have donated space and other resources to help us run summer programming at the University for students from the surrounding communities. We are greatly shocked and saddened that NCSC announced that it is closing its doors due to the ripple effects of the financial crisis. NCSC has been a key player in helping Kids Creative grow and serve more youth in New York City. While we certainly hope that the connection between Kids Creative and Fordham will continue, more importantly, we are losing an institution uniquely focused on improving the lives of impoverished youth around the country.

Below is an excerpt from the letter written by NCSC Executive Director John Beam announcing the organization's closing (you can read the full text here):

"Established in 1992 and first led by Dr. Carolyn Denham, NCSC began with fostering the integration of education and social services at the school-site level by developing a national university network to promote inter- professional education and university-community partnerships to benefit low-income children and families. This network catalyzed and supported collaborative initiatives among 12 public schools and nine universities. These initiatives served over 1,500 low-income children annually and brought supportive social services into the schools to increase readiness to learn; to provide after-school cultural, recreational, and academic enrichment programs; and to strengthen the role of the local public school in the community it serves."
